Hot Air Balloon Flight Over Masai Mara: Sunrise safari from above
Rise before sunrise and watch herds move across the savannah from the air
A hot air balloon flight over Masai Mara National Reserve starts before dawn with a 4WD transfer to the launch site, a roughly 1-hour flight at sunrise, and a champagne breakfast on the savannah plains afterward. The balloon holds 12–16 passengers in four compartments of 2–4 people each, with all guests standing at the basket edge for 360-degree views. A live guide speaks English, Italian, French or German, and children from age 7 are welcome.

The experience
You wake at 5 a.m. for a 4WD transfer to the launch point in the heart of Masai Mara. By 6 a.m., the crew briefs you on safety while the balloon inflates: a process worth watching for the scale of it. The flight itself lasts roughly an hour, timed for the moment the sun clears the horizon and the savannah light turns gold. From the basket, you see wildebeest, elephants, giraffes and big cats moving across the acacia woodlands and river valleys below, a perspective no ground-level game drive can match. The burner noise and heat affect everyone in the basket equally, so a hat helps. You'll stand throughout the flight for unobstructed viewing, and the pilot rotates the basket so no compartment misses the wildlife.
After landing, the crew sets up a full bush breakfast under a balanite tree on the Mara plains: sparkling wine, Kenyan-style food, and time to catch your breath before the return game drive. The whole experience, from wake-up to the drive back, takes roughly four hours. Transfers, binoculars, a certificate and photos are included. You'll need closed-toe shoes, warm layers for the pre-dawn air, and a secure hat that won't blow away at altitude.

Is this one for you?The entire outing runs roughly four hours from pickup to return, which fits neatly into a morning and leaves the afternoon free for a second game drive or other activities. If you need a full day of ground-based safari, a separate vehicle tour works better. If you want the aerial perspective without committing the whole day, this flight is built for that.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, French, German and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (7 to 16 years). Under 7: they can't be included in the booking.
What time does the balloon flight actually take off?
The flight departs just before sunrise, around 6:15 a.m., after a coffee and safety briefing at the launch site. The 4WD pickup from your location begins at 5 a.m. to get you there in time.
How many people fit in the balloon basket?
The basket holds 12–16 passengers divided into four compartments of 2–4 guests each. Couples are kept together, and compartments are assigned by weight so passengers cannot swap positions.
What happens after the flight ends?
After landing, you sit down to a full bush breakfast set up on the savannah plains under a balanite tree, complete with sparkling wine and Kenyan-style food. A 4WD game drive returns you to your starting point afterward.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear closed-toe shoes and bring warm layers for the pre-dawn air and altitude. A secure hat is essential. The wind at height can catch loose headwear. Sunscreen and insect repellent are wise to apply before departure, and a camera strap keeps your hands free during the flight.
