The Experience

I thought I knew what to expect from a “traditional Japanese music show” in Tokyo—maybe something formal, a little distant. But stepping into the Zakuro venue felt more like joining a living room jam session (if your friends wore kimono and played koto and taiko). The space was small enough that I could see the musicians’ fingers moving on the strings, but not so tiny that it felt cramped. Someone near me whispered, “You can smell the tatami,” and honestly, you could—there’s this faint grassy scent that makes you feel like you’re somewhere old and cared for.

Our guide for the night, Yuki, switched between Japanese and English so smoothly I barely noticed. She’d pause after each song to explain what we’d just heard or point out how the shakuhachi flute makes that breathy sound—she even let us hold one during intermission (heavier than I thought). At one point, they played a cover of a Beatles song on all these ancient instruments; everyone laughed when she asked if we recognized it. I did, but it took me a minute—koto really changes “Yesterday.”

The musicians weren’t distant at all. Afterward, they invited us up for photos and answered questions about their instruments—I tried to say “arigatou gozaimasu” properly and got a big smile (and probably butchered it). There were families with kids, an older couple from France who asked about shamisen tuning… It felt easy to be curious here. Photos and videos were fine too, which surprised me because usually places are strict about that. The whole thing lasted about an hour but somehow lingered longer in my head than most museum visits do.
