The Experience

I didn’t expect Rainbow Bridge to feel so quiet at night — you see it in movies, but gliding over it in a private car with the city stretching out on both sides is something else. Our driver, Mr. Sato, pointed out Odaiba’s ferris wheel pulsing with colors (he said it has over a hundred patterns, which honestly sounds like an exaggeration until you see it). The air smelled faintly salty from the bay, windows cracked just enough to let in the city hum. It felt like we were inside Tokyo’s own electric bloodstream.

We stopped by Tokyo Tower next — I’d seen photos before, but the orange glow against the black sky made it look almost unreal. Mr. Sato insisted on taking our picture (“stand here, best angle!”) and he was right; my partner laughed because I blinked in every shot. Driving through Ginza was another surprise: those buildings are all shapes and lights, some so shiny they almost hurt your eyes. There was a couple taking wedding photos outside Tokyo Station — she had this huge white dress that looked totally out of place but also perfect somehow.

Senso-ji Temple at night is different than during the day. No crowds, just the lanterns and that pagoda shining quietly. The shops were closed but you could smell leftover incense near the gate. Mr. Sato told us stories about Kannon and how many people visit every year — thirty million or something wild like that. We finished near Tokyo Skytree at this little riverside spot he knew; the tower reflected upside-down in the water (I tried to get a photo but my hands were too cold). Honestly, I still think about that view sometimes when I can’t sleep.
