The Experience

“Don’t worry if you get lost — everyone does at least once,” our guide, Emi, grinned as we squeezed into the side entrance of Tsukiji Market. I’d barely finished my coffee and already the air was thick with that salty-fresh smell you only get near the sea (and, honestly, a little bit of grilled eel). We followed Emi through narrow lanes where vendors called out in rapid Japanese, waving trays of uni and tuna so bright it almost looked fake. I tried to say thank you in Japanese to one old man selling tamagoyaki — he laughed and handed me a sample anyway. It was still warm, sweet and eggy.

After that, we hopped the subway to Toyosu Fish Market. It’s huge — all glass and steel, nothing like the old Tsukiji chaos. Emi pointed out the observation windows where chefs watch the tuna auctions (we missed it by hours; apparently you have to wake up at 5am for that). Still, just seeing those massive bluefin lined up below was wild. She explained how Toyosu replaced Tsukiji for wholesale but locals still come back to Tsukiji for street food. By the end my feet hurt but I didn’t really care — there’s something about walking these neighborhoods with someone local that makes Tokyo feel less overwhelming, you know?
