The Experience

Ever wonder what Tokyo feels like when you slip off the main road? I did—so I let our guide, Keiko, lead us through Yanaka’s narrow backstreets instead of the usual Shibuya scramble. The air felt different here—like it held old stories (and a bit of grilled fish smoke from a tiny izakaya). We passed wooden houses with laundry flapping above our heads. A cat watched us from a windowsill, totally unimpressed. Keiko smiled and told us Yanaka survived earthquakes and wars mostly untouched—“That’s why it still looks like this,” she said, waving at a tangle of wires and tiled roofs.

We ducked into Nezu Shrine just as the wind picked up. There was this faint smell of incense and earth after rain—hard to explain but somehow calming. The azalea garden wasn’t in bloom (wrong season), but even so, the quietness there made me slow down. At one point I tried to say “tsutsuji” (azalea) in Japanese; Keiko laughed gently—probably because I butchered it—and then taught me how to say it right. It’s those small moments that stick with you more than any big landmark.

Shibamata was next—a neighborhood where time sort of folds in on itself. Street food stalls lined the road to Taishakuten Temple; we grabbed kusa-dango (mugwort rice balls) that left my fingers sticky and green for longer than I’d admit. The shopkeeper nodded at us with that polite Tokyo half-bow, not saying much but somehow making us feel welcome anyway. By the time we reached the wood-carved gates, my feet were tired but my head felt full—in a good way.

I didn’t expect to end up thinking about Bashō’s poems in Fukagawa or giggling at fake sushi samples in Kitchen Town, but that’s what happens when you let someone local set the pace. This Tokyo walking tour isn’t about ticking boxes—it’s about letting yourself get lost (but safely, with someone who knows which train to catch home).
