The experience

Six hours means you move at a pace that lets you linger. The guide meets you on foot in Takayama and takes you through Sanmachi Suji, the three main streets where merchants, craftsmen and farmers built their lives during the Edo period and where those wooden storefronts and narrow lanes still stand. You'll walk past shops that have operated for generations (OHNOYA, a miso and soy brewery founded 250 years ago, sits among them), and the guide's licensed knowledge of local history and culture fills in what the buildings themselves don't say.

The Takayama Morning Markets (Asa-ichi) come early and move fast. Fresh produce, local crafts, dolls and handmade chopsticks fill the stalls along the Miya River between two bridges, and the earlier you arrive, the better the pick. You'll see how the market still works as a hub the way it has for more than two centuries. Sake tastings are available at stops like Sansha, where you can sample more than ten types of their dry sake and try steamed buns made with sake, or at Kawashiri, which specializes in aged brews: both charge a small fee for the tasting itself.

You choose which three or four sites from the curated list become your itinerary, so the tour shapes itself around what matters to you. The Takayama Jin'ya, a surviving government headquarters from 1692 to 1871, or the morning market, or the sake breweries. You decide.
