The experience

Your guide arrives at your hotel and the two of you decide what the morning holds. The itinerary is not fixed. You can ask about the festivals happening during your stay, check what the weather will do, and choose whether to start at the Takayama Morning Markets, where vendors sell produce and local goods, or at the Jinya, the former government office where you can walk through interrogation rooms and see the gardens where Edo-period administrators once worked. The guide shapes the route around what interests you most.

From there you move through Sanmachi Suji, the three streets of merchant houses, breweries, restaurants and shops that survived from the Edo period. The buildings are narrow and close, the wooden storefronts original, and the guide can explain what each type of shop sold and how the street functioned as the commercial heart of the town. Then you reach Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine and its Festival Floats Exhibition Hall, where you see the elaborate wooden floats, some of them centuries old, that come out during Takayama's two major festivals each year.
