The experience

What makes this tour different is the choice: instead of a fixed itinerary, you pick 3-4 stops from a list that includes the Takayama Morning Markets (where vendors sell fresh produce and local crafts), the Kusakabe Folk Museum (a national Important Cultural Property rebuilt in 1879 with Hida craftsmanship), the Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine and its Festival Floats Exhibition Hall, Sanmachi Suji (the three main streets of preserved Edo-period buildings), and Matsuri no Mori, which displays full-sized replica festival floats decorated with gold leaf and lacquer. The guide's knowledge of the region's history and craft traditions shapes what you learn at each stop, not a script.

The morning markets are an essential Takayama tradition called Asa-ichi. The Miyagawa Morning Market, which has operated for more than two centuries on either bank of the Miya River, fills early with vendors selling everything from local fruit and vegetables to dolls and chopsticks. The earlier you arrive, the better the selection. From there, the tour moves through Sanmachi, where the legacy of the Edo period (when Takayama was a hub for craftsmen, merchants and farmers) is preserved in the buildings and workshops that still line the streets.

The Kusakabe Folk Museum and the Festival Floats Exhibition Hall showcase the scale of Hida craftsmanship. The Kusakabe house, rebuilt after a fire by the master artisan Jisuke Kawajiri, displays the unparalleled woodworking and joinery the region is known for. The festival floats, several hundred years old and exhibited at Sakurayama Hachimangu, are ranked among Japan's finest examples of decorative craft. Matsuri no Mori offers another angle: full-sized replicas of the floats, mechanical karakuri dolls that perform traditional dances, and a nature museum with a global insect collection.
