The experience

The Takayama Morning Markets sit on the Miyagawa riverside and stock what local growers and vendors bring in each day: seasonal fruits and vegetables, antiques, and regional food specialties you can sample. From there the tour moves into Sanmachi Suji, the old merchant quarter where wooden storefronts and sake breweries line narrow streets that have changed little since the 1600s. Your guide talks through the local history, the craft of sake making, and the culture that kept this town intact.

The whole route takes an hour and ends at Nakabashi bridge. A live guide leads in English, Italian or Japanese. The tour covers ground on foot through both the market and the old town, and all surfaces are wheelchair accessible. Service animals are welcome, and if you're traveling with infants or small children, strollers work on the route.
