The experience
Sanmachi Suji is the heart of this tour: a preserved merchant quarter where wooden storefronts and sake breweries line narrow streets. Your guide walks you through the old township, explaining how Takayama became known for its skilled craftspeople and the role trade played in the city's growth. You'll pass a bridge that makes for a good photograph, and stop at a government office from the Edo period, one of only a few of its kind still standing in Japan (entry inside is optional and not part of the tour).
The route also takes in temples and shrines central to the area's religious life. You'll see a large ginkgo tree with its own local stories, and a triple tower within a temple compound. Along the way, the guide points out traditional houses and explains the work of the takumi: the master craftspeople who built Takayama's reputation. The walking pace is steady but manageable, and the tour adapts to the time available. If the full route won't fit in the window, your guide will prioritize the main stops.
After the walking portion, your guide takes you to Hida Folk Village, an open-air museum of traditional architecture and rural life. You explore it on your own. Entry fees are separate from this tour. The whole experience works in rain, so weather won't cancel it.
