Step-by-step itinerary

Walking tour of Takayama old town

  • See old township and learn history
  • Take photo on the bridge
  • View unique old Japanese government office
  • Explore Takumi crafts and Japanese religions

The experience

The walk moves through the streets where Takayama's merchant class and artisans built their lives during the Edo period, and your guide explains the history and culture as you move between stops. You'll cross a bridge that photographs well, see the old government office (the only surviving structure of its kind in the country), and learn about the Takumi, the master craftspeople who made the Hida region famous for its woodworking and joinery. The tour also touches on Japanese religious practice as it was lived in this place.

The pace is walking speed through town, so the route is accessible to most travelers. If you want to enter the government office building itself, that's possible but costs extra and falls outside the tour time. A live guide in English leads the group. If you need a different language or prefer a private departure, let the operator know when you book.

What’s included

  • Live English-speaking guide for the 45-minute walk.
  • access to the old town streets and exterior views of the historic government office and traditional craftspeople's quarters.
  • explanation of Takayama's Edo-period history, local religious traditions, and the Hida region's artisan heritage.
