The experience

How do you capture a day in Japan without stopping to ask strangers for photos or second-guessing every angle? A professional photographer leads this private tour, shooting your moments while you take in the sights. The guide has published work in Lonely Planet and tourism board city guides, and specializes in portrait and travel street photography: the kind that actually looks like your trip, not a postcard someone else composed.

Takayama Jinya anchors the morning: the administrative headquarters where 25 generations of provincial governors ruled Hida Province from 1692 to 1868, its rooms and records still intact. From there, you walk Sannomachi Street, where Edo-period buildings (sake breweries, coffee houses, old shops) line the block in their original state. The photographer captures the light on wooden facades and the texture of centuries-old storefronts as you move through them. After the drive to Shirakawago, a 10-minute uphill walk brings you to the village overlook. The view of thatched Gassho-zukuri houses clustered in the valley is the shot most travelers want, and your guide knows exactly when and where to position you for it. Inside Wada House, you see the architectural details that make these structures unique (the steep roof pitch, the interior timber frame), and the photographer documents how the space actually feels rather than how it photographs from the standard angle.

The tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Kanazawa, private transportation between all stops, highway tolls and parking fees. You receive 30 edited digital images selected by the photographer from the day's shoot. One-way itineraries to or from Kanazawa are available. Pickup or drop-off in Toyama costs an additional 10,000 yen. Entrance fees to Takayama Jinya and Wada House are not included and vary by site.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and Japanese.

What exactly is Takayama Jinya and why does it matter?

Takayama Jinya was the administrative center where provincial governors managed Hida Province for 176 years under the Edo Shogunate, from 1692 to 1868. The building and its records survive intact, giving you a direct look at how the region was actually governed during Japan's feudal period.

Can I see inside the traditional Gassho houses, or just look at them from outside?

You visit Wada House, one of the preserved Gassho-zukuri farmhouses in Shirakawago, and tour its interior to see the architectural details: the steep thatched roof, the timber frame and the layout that made these houses work for large families and silkworm farming.

What do I do with the 30 photos after the tour ends?

The photographer selects and edits 30 digital images from the day and provides them to you. You own the files and can print, share or use them however you like.

Does the tour include meals?

Lunch is not included. You'll have time to eat at a restaurant in Takayama or Shirakawago during the day, and your photographer can recommend places.

What if I'm traveling alone or with just one other person? Does the price change?

The tour is priced by group size: one option for 1–2 people, one for 3–4 people, and one for 5–7 people. You choose the tier that matches your group at checkout.
