The Experience

The photographer meets you at your hotel and handles the route while you step into the frame instead of behind the camera. Gokayama spreads across five valleys with 40 villages; you'll walk through Ainokura and Suganuma, both UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1995, where Gassho zukuri houses—steep-roofed farmhouses built without nails—still define the landscape. The photographer shoots portraits and travel moments here, capturing the way light hits the old timber and the way you move through it, then does the same in Shirakawago, the more famous village where the same architectural style and mountain setting draw crowds year-round. You'll step inside the Wada house to see how those roofs and thick beams actually work, then walk uphill from the car park to the overlook for the full village view.

The guide speaks English and knows the light at each stop—where to stand for the best angle, when the shadows work, how to frame a portrait against the houses without the crowds. You get location-based photography tips as you move, so you understand what's happening in the frame, and the photographer selects 30 edited images from the day to take home. Transportation between Kanazawa, Toyama or Takayama (you choose your start and end point at checkout), highway tolls and parking fees are all covered; you only arrange lunch and pay entry to the Wada house separately.

What’s included

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off at your chosen location.
  • private transportation between villages with highway tolls and parking covered.
  • professional English-speaking photographer guide throughout the day.
  • portrait and travel photo sessions at both Gokayama and Shirakawago.
  • 30 edited digital images selected by the photographer.
  • location-based photography tips as you move through each stop.
  • access to the Wada house interior (entrance fee separate).

Top questions

What are Gassho zukuri houses and why do they matter in these villages?

Gassho zukuri are traditional Japanese farmhouses with steep, thatched roofs built without nails, designed to shed heavy mountain snow. Ainokura and Suganuma in Gokayama, and Shirakawago, preserve entire villages of them—UNESCO recognized them in 1995 because so few remain elsewhere in Japan, and the tour includes a walk through the Wada house so you see the interior structure and craftsmanship.

Do I need photography experience to book this tour?

No. The photographer guides you through the day and handles composition and lighting; you're free to enjoy the villages without worrying about angles or asking strangers for pictures. The location tips you pick up along the way are useful whether you're a beginner or you shoot regularly.

What happens with the photos after the tour ends?

The photographer selects and edits 30 images from your day and gives you the digital files to keep. The selection is the photographer's choice based on the best moments and light, not every shot taken.

Can I choose where the tour starts and finishes?

Yes. You pick one of five options at checkout: round-trip from Kanazawa, Toyama or Takayama, or one-way between Toyama and Takayama, or between Kanazawa and Takayama. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included for whichever location you choose.

How much walking is involved in this tour?

The tour suits all fitness levels. You'll stroll through Gokayama and Shirakawago villages at a relaxed pace for photo sessions, and walk uphill about 10 minutes from the car park to the Shirakawago viewpoint—the walk is gentle but does go uphill due to temporary car park closure.

What costs are not included in the tour price?

Lunch is not included, so you'll arrange that in the villages. Entry to the Wada house is separate; the photographer's entrance fee applies only if you choose an option that includes it.
