The experience

The bus leaves Kanazawa Station at 8 a.m. and heads to Shirakawa-go, arriving by mid-morning. You'll have roughly two hours to walk the village at your own pace. The guide gives you a map and points out the main sights and souvenir shops beforehand, so you know where to go without wandering. Lunch is a Japanese set meal built around local Hida dishes and mountain produce, eaten during the stop there. The Gassho Museum, attached to the roadside station, shows the traditional farmhouse style before you venture into the village itself (it closes December 29 to January 1, when the tour stops elsewhere instead).

After lunch, the bus takes you to Hida Takayama, where you have roughly two hours of free time to explore the old town on foot. The charming townscape is built for wandering: shops, restaurants and small museums line the streets. There's no scheduled guide walk here. You move at your own speed. The bus collects you by mid-afternoon and returns to Kanazawa Station by 5:15 p.m.

An English-speaking guide travels with you and explains the route, but the walking itself is yours to direct. The guide will also tell you beforehand what each place is known for, so you can decide what to linger on and what to skip. The air-conditioned bus means you're not navigating transport between the two towns yourself: that leg is handled.
