The experience

Four hours or six hours on foot through Kanazawa, with a government-licensed guide who knows the city's history and culture in depth. Before you book, you tell the operator which sites matter to you: Kenrokuen, one of Japan's three great gardens, with centuries of landscaping by the Maeda lords; the Higashi Chaya District, a preserved teahouse quarter from the Edo Period where geisha still perform; the 21st Century Museum with its circular, faceless design that lets you approach contemporary art from any angle; Kanazawa Castle, rebuilt after fires and now the center of a restoration project; or the D.T. Suzuki Museum, the Ninja Temple with its hidden escape routes, Nagamachi's samurai residences with their earthen walls and water canals, or Omicho Market, a 200-stall food market that has fed the city since the Edo Period. Your guide arrives at the time and place you choose and builds the day around what you want to see.

The guide is certified by the Japanese government, which means they have passed exams on Japanese culture and history and can answer the questions most tours skip. You walk the whole time (this is not a bus tour with stops), so the pace stays with you and the guide can point out details a moving vehicle would miss. The four-hour tour fits 2–3 sites comfortably. The six-hour tour opens up 3–4 sites and lets you linger longer in each one. You choose the sites before booking, so the itinerary is yours, not a fixed route everyone takes.

Entrance fees to the sites are not included and vary by attraction. Kenrokuen costs a few hundred yen, the 21st Century Museum a bit more. Meals and any local transport you use on your own are also separate. The guide meets you on foot (there is no vehicle pickup), so you'll want to be in or near your hotel or a central Kanazawa location when the tour starts.
