Sushi Making Class at Tsukiji Fish Market, Tokyo
Make sushi with your hands, not just watch someone else make it
A one-hour hands-on sushi making class at Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo where you make 10 pieces of sushi (tuna and salmon nigiri, vegetable sushi, inari sushi, and a tuna roll), then arrange them in your own handcrafted wooden bento box and eat the meal you prepared. No cooking experience needed. English guidance included throughout.
The experience
You meet your instructor at the studio on the third floor of the Sushizanmai Bekkan building in Tsukiji Market and spend the hour making sushi from start to finish. The ingredients come from specialty shops connected to the market itself (tuna, salmon, vegetables, Japanese omelet, and nori), and you work with real Japanese knives and traditional sushi tools. The instructor walks you through each step: shaping nigiri by hand, rolling a tuna roll, and assembling inari sushi. You also grate and taste fresh wasabi yourself, which is part of how the class teaches you about Japanese sushi ingredients and technique.
As you finish each piece, you arrange your sushi in a wooden bento box made specifically for this experience, building a colorful presentation as you go. The arrangement is not decoration for its own sake. It reflects the Japanese tradition of presenting food beautifully before eating it. Once your bento is complete, staff photograph your creation and you photograph it too. Then you eat the sushi you made, right there in the classroom.
The one-hour format means you can fit this into a morning or afternoon in Tokyo without reshaping your whole day. Families with children ages 5 and up often join. Younger children can attend too, and babies are welcome if they sit on an adult's lap. Vegetarian and vegan options are available with advance notice. All sushi must be eaten on-site: takeout is not permitted for food safety reasons.

What exactly do I make during the sushi class?
You make 10 pieces of sushi: tuna and salmon nigiri shaped by hand, vegetable sushi, traditional inari sushi, a Japanese omelet piece, and a tuna roll. Each piece uses fresh ingredients sourced from Tsukiji Market specialty shops, and you arrange all of them in your handcrafted wooden bento box as you finish.
Do I need any cooking experience to join this class?
No cooking or sushi-making experience is required. The instructor provides step-by-step demonstrations and clear guidance in English, and the class is designed for beginners. Children ages 5–9 frequently join and follow along with the beginner-friendly approach.
Where exactly is the classroom, and how do I get there?
The classroom is on the third floor of the Sushizanmai Bekkan building at 4-10-6 Tsukiji, Chuo City, Tokyo, right in the heart of Tsukiji Market. Use the narrow pathway on the right side of the building and take the elevator to the third floor. An elevator makes it accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
Will I really taste fresh wasabi, and what does it involve?
Yes, fresh wasabi tasting is included. You grate real fresh wasabi yourself during the class and taste it, learning how it differs from the tube wasabi most people know. It is part of experiencing authentic Japanese sushi ingredients and preparation.
Can I take my finished sushi bento home with me?
All sushi made during the class must be eaten at the venue during the session for food safety reasons. The wooden bento box used in the class also stays there, but you can purchase a brand-new handcrafted wooden bento box as a souvenir to take home if you'd like.
