Sushi Class near Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto
Make five types of sushi and eat what you've shaped
A 90-minute sushi class in Kyoto near Fushimi Inari Shrine where four skilled chefs teach you to make nigiri, gunkan and two types of hosomaki roll. You practice with sushi samples first, then work with fresh fish delivered daily from the Kyoto Central Wholesale Market. The sushi you make is plated and served as your meal.
The experience
Four sushi chefs walk you through the fundamentals in English, starting with self-introductions and practice using sushi samples so you understand the technique before working with actual fish. The fish arrives fresh each morning from the Kyoto Central Wholesale Market, purchased by veteran chefs who know what to select. You'll shape five nigiri, one gunkan (the boat-shaped piece), and use a bamboo mat to roll two types of hosomaki, which you then portion into six equal pieces.
The class runs 90 minutes total, and everything you need is provided: bamboo mat, gloves, towels, plates and the ingredients themselves. You arrange your finished sushi according to your own eye, then eat what you've made. A vegan option is available with 48 hours' notice, and children from age five are welcome to join.
The location is near Fushimi Inari Shrine, with public transportation options nearby. If you have allergies, contact the operator in advance so they can prepare accordingly.
