Roll, press and plate your own nigiri while a sushi chef guides your hands

A sushi making class in Kyoto where you learn to hand-form nigiri sushi from a live chef in English or Japanese. The 90-minute session covers tuna, salmon and other popular ingredients; you make the sushi yourself, then eat it. Children 3 and under join free by sharing a dish with an adult when you arrange seating in advance.

The Experience

Kyoto's sushi making class starts with a chef showing you the grip, the pressure and the angle that turn rice and fish into nigiri. You'll work through the basics on tuna and salmon, the two ingredients that teach the fundamentals -- how much rice, how to shape it, when to stop pressing. Beginners pick it up fast because the chef watches your hands and corrects the motion, not the result. By the time you've made a few pieces, your fingers know the difference between too loose and too tight.

The 90 minutes includes everything: the sushi rice, the fish, the nori, the small tools. You make enough to eat a real meal, not a tasting plate. The chef plates what you've made, and you sit down and taste it while it's still at room temperature -- the way nigiri is meant to be eaten. It's the moment the class becomes real: you're not practicing anymore, you're eating sushi you shaped yourself.

The class runs in English or Japanese, so language isn't a barrier. Children 3 and under can join for free by sharing a dish with an adult, though you'll need to contact the venue in advance so they can set up a seat. A foot bath is available some days if there's space, but it's not guaranteed. Drinks are sold separately if you want them.

Top questions

What sushi ingredients will I actually make with?

Tuna and salmon are the main ones -- the chef uses these popular ingredients because they teach you the core technique that works for any nigiri. You'll make enough pieces to eat a full meal.

Do I need any sushi-making experience to join?

No. The class is built for beginners; the chef teaches the grip and the pressure step by step, and you learn by doing it yourself while they watch and adjust your hands.

How long is the whole class, and what's included in the time?

The class runs 90 minutes total. That covers instruction, making your own nigiri, and eating what you made. All ingredients, rice, fish and tools are included.

Can I bring a young child who's under 3?

Yes, children 3 and under join free by sharing a dish with an adult. You'll need to contact the venue before you arrive so they can prepare a seat in advance.

What happens after I make the sushi -- do I eat it right away?

Yes. Once you've finished making your pieces, the chef plates them and you sit down and eat the nigiri you made. It's part of the experience, not something you take home.
