Walk underwater without getting your face wet

Sea Walker is a helmet diving activity in Ishigaki where you walk along the ocean floor without needing to swim or hold your breath, seeing coral reefs and tropical fish in clear water. The experience lasts around two hours and includes a guide, all equipment, insurance and hotel pickup. No diving certification or swimming ability is required.

The experience

The setup is simple: you put on a specially designed helmet that supplies air while keeping your face completely dry, then walk down to the ocean floor with your guide. There's no need to learn techniques or worry about breathing underwater. The helmet handles that for you. You move at your own pace along the seafloor, staying upright and able to point at things, gesture to your guide, and move freely without the restrictions of a wetsuit or tank.

What you see depends on where you walk: colorful coral reefs, schools of tropical fish, and other marine life that live in Ishigaki's waters. The experience is designed to feel like visiting an underwater zoo rather than a technical dive. Your guide stays with you the whole time and takes commemorative photos underwater that you keep afterward.

Hotel pickup is included, so you don't arrange transport to the meeting point. The activity takes around two hours total. You'll need to avoid flying on the day you do this: the pressure change after breathing compressed air means you should wait at least 12 hours before boarding a plane.

Plan to stay in Ishigaki for the rest of the day after your session, since flying within 12 hours of the activity isn't safe.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Japanese.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

Can I do Sea Walker if I've never swum or I'm nervous in the water?

Yes. Sea Walker is built for non-swimmers and people who feel anxious about water. You walk on the ocean floor rather than swim, and the helmet keeps your face dry and your breathing steady, so there's no sensation of being underwater or holding your breath.

What happens if I'm not comfortable going deep?

You control how far down you walk. Your guide stays with you and moves at whatever pace feels right. You're walking upright on the seafloor, not descending into open water, so you can turn back or stay in shallower areas if you prefer.

How long does the whole experience take?

The activity itself is around two hours, including time to put on the helmet, walk on the ocean floor, and return to the surface. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so add travel time from your accommodation.

Will I get wet, or does the helmet really keep my face dry?

The helmet keeps your face and head completely dry. Your body below the neck will be in the water, so wear clothes you don't mind getting wet or bring a change. The operator provides all diving gear.

What's included in the price?

The guide, all equipment (helmet, wetsuit, weights and anything else you need), insurance coverage, hotel pickup and drop-off, and underwater photos taken by staff are all included.
