The experience

You meet at Ishigaki Port Ferry Terminal or get picked up from your hotel in southern Ishigaki, then slip into the crystal-clear water of the Blue Cave with your guide and a small group. The cave is a hidden sea grotto where the sunlight filters through the water and turns it a glowing blue. The effect only happens when you're inside looking around. At low tide the water is shallow enough to touch the bottom, which is why first-timers and families often choose this over deeper snorkeling sites. Your guide stays with you the whole time, keeps things relaxed, and carries a waterproof camera to photograph the colorful tropical fish and coral you pass. All the photos get shared with you free after the tour.

The snorkeling part wraps up back at Ishigaki Port after about three hours. Your guide provides the snorkel, mask, fins, life jacket and marine shoes. In winter you also get a wetsuit. A warm shower is available near the terminal if you want to rinse off. Then you board the ferry to Taketomi Island with a round-trip ticket included: no guide accompanies you on the island, and there's no direct transfer, so you're free to wander the postcard-perfect Okinawa villages with their red-tiled roofs and narrow lanes at whatever pace you want. You can relax on the beaches, explore the shops, or just sit and take in the old-town atmosphere. The ferry runs regularly, so you can return whenever suits you.

The operator is Okinawa-certified and all guides are certified water rescuers. Your guide speaks English and Japanese. The tour runs in the rain unless safety conditions make it unsafe. If weather or traffic forces changes to the itinerary, the shop contacts you about a partial refund or other measures. Arrive at least ten minutes early. The tour departs on schedule regardless. Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet, and use the restroom before you start. There are none near the snorkeling site.
