The Experience

“Try not to fall in!” our guide Yuta grinned as he handed me the paddle. I’d never tried stand up paddleboarding before — and honestly, balancing on that wide board in Kabira Bay felt wobbly at first. The water was so clear you could see right down to the sand, and there was this faint salty breeze that made my hair stick to my face. We drifted past a fisherman waving from his little boat, and Yuta pointed out the coral patches below — he called one “the sleeping cat” (I didn’t really see it, but nodded anyway). My friend took a canoe instead; she said she preferred sitting down after last night’s izakaya crawl.

After that we changed into wetsuits (surprisingly comfy) and headed for the snorkeling spot. The walk to the Blue Cave was short but rocky — I stubbed my toe on something sharp and tried not to swear too loudly. Inside, the cave glowed this wild electric blue when sunlight hit the water just right. Fish darted around our ankles — tiny flashes of yellow and silver — and I kept losing track of time just floating there, listening to everyone’s muffled laughter echoing off the walls. It smelled like seaweed and wet stone inside, which sounds weird but felt kind of grounding.

On the way back, I realized my arms were tired but in that good way you get after swimming all day. There was a hot shower near the port (don’t expect fancy shampoo or anything), which felt like heaven after saltwater everywhere. Yuta showed us some photos he’d taken underwater — my hair looked ridiculous but I didn’t care. If you’re thinking about a day trip in Ishigaki, especially with a small group or kids (they’ll probably get a canoe), this tour just feels easygoing and real. I still think about that blue light sometimes when things get noisy back home.

What’s included

Your day includes all SUP or canoe equipment for Kabira Bay, wetsuits if it’s chilly out, snorkeling gear for exploring Blue Cave with a local guide leading the way, liability insurance for peace of mind, digital photos from your adventure (even if your hair goes wild), plus access to hot showers back at the port before heading home again.
