Swim inside a glowing blue cave and across one of Japan's largest coral reefs.

Snorkel in Ishigaki at two sites: the Blue Cave, where the interior glows blue and fish school around you, and Phantom Island, a tidal sandbar surrounded by "Seokusei-shoko," one of Japan's largest coral reefs. A guide leads the activity in English or Japanese, provides all safety gear and a wetsuit in winter, takes photos with a waterproof camera and gives you the data free, and arranges pickup from Ishigaki Port. The tour runs 4 hours and welcomes beginners; guides support first-timers and nervous swimmers.

The Experience

The Blue Cave is the centerpiece—a sea cave whose interior walls reflect light and turn the water brilliant blue. You'll swim inside with a guide, watch fish move through the lit space, and surface in a chamber where the color is most intense. The cave itself is unexplored enough that the guide will point out what most visitors miss: the way the light shifts as you move, the fish that shelter in the rock crevices, the scale of the opening above water.

Phantom Island comes next. It's a sandbar on the west side of Ishigaki that appears and disappears with the tide—hence the name. You'll land on it and snorkel in the surrounding water, which sits atop "Seokusei-shoko," one of Japan's largest coral reef systems. The guide describes it as a natural aquarium: the reef is dense, the fish are abundant, and the water is shallow enough that you can see the structure below. The whole site changes shape depending on when you visit, so the island you stand on is never quite the same twice.

The guide photographs you underwater with a special waterproof camera during both stops and gives you the digital files at no extra cost. Life jackets, fins, masks and special shoes are provided; wetsuits are included in winter. You'll have access to hot showers near the terminal afterward. The operator contacts you the day before with the exact meeting time and place—late bookings go straight to Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal. Tours run in rain but are canceled only if conditions are unsafe.

Top questions

What's inside the Blue Cave when you snorkel there?

The Blue Cave's interior walls reflect light and turn the water a bright blue; fish school through the lit space, and you surface inside a chamber where the color is strongest. The cave is unexplored enough that guides point out details most visitors miss.

Is Phantom Island always the same size and shape?

Phantom Island is a sandbar that changes shape depending on the tide level, so the island you land on is never quite the same twice. It sits in shallow water above one of Japan's largest coral reefs.

What languages do the guides speak?

Guides lead the snorkeling in English or Japanese. You choose your language preference when you book.

Do I get the underwater photos you take during the snorkeling?

Yes. The guide photographs you with a waterproof camera at both the Blue Cave and Phantom Island, and you receive the digital files free of charge.

What happens if I'm a beginner or nervous about swimming?

Beginners are welcome. Guides are trained to support first-timers and nervous swimmers throughout the activity, and all safety equipment—life jackets, fins, masks and special shoes—is provided.

How do I know where and when to meet for the tour?

The operator contacts you by phone or email the day before with your meeting place and time. If you book after 5:00 PM, go directly to Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal. If you don't hear from them by 6:00 PM the day before, contact them using the information on your ticket.
