Snorkel a tidal island that changes shape, then explore Okinawa's old villages by foot and cart

This 4-hour snorkeling and sightseeing tour from Ishigaki combines two stops: Phantom Island, a sandy beach that shifts with the tide, where you swim among corals and fish with a guide; and Taketomi Island, a preserved Okinawan village with red tile roofs and coral-sand roads that you explore on your own after the ferry ride. The guide provides all snorkeling gear, a life jacket, and fins; hot showers are available at the port afterward. Ages 3–59 only; pregnant guests and those with certain medical conditions cannot participate.

The Experience

Phantom Island is the centerpiece—a sandbar on Ishigaki's west side that emerges and vanishes with the tide, which is why locals call it a phantom. The guide leads you into the water with mask, fins and life jacket, and you swim through shallow coral and schools of fish. No diving experience is required; the guide stays with the group and adjusts the pace to the water conditions. The snorkeling happens in the morning, and the tour ends back at Ishigaki Port.

After the snorkeling portion, you receive a round-trip ferry ticket to Taketomi Island and make the crossing on your own—no guide accompanies you on the island itself. Taketomi is a working village where the streets are still paved with crushed coral and lined with houses topped in red tile, many with Shisa guardian statues in the yards. The main draw is the buffalo cart ride, a slow pull through the village that lets you photograph the landscape and the old architecture without rushing. You have time to walk, eat, and explore the shops and cafes before catching the ferry back to Ishigaki.

Snorkeling gear, life jacket, fins and a wetsuit (in winter) are all provided. The tour runs in light rain but may cancel if conditions turn unsafe. Wear swimwear under your clothes, use the restroom before departure, and avoid alcohol. Hot showers are available near the port after you return. The guide speaks English or Japanese depending on the day's bookings; confirm your language preference when you book.

Top questions

What is Phantom Island and why does it change shape?

Phantom Island is a sandy beach that floats in the ocean on Ishigaki's west side, and its outline shifts with the tide—hence the name. You snorkel in the shallow water around it among corals and fish, with the guide supporting you throughout.

Do I need snorkeling experience to join this tour?

No experience is necessary. The guide provides all equipment—mask, fins, life jacket and wetsuit—and stays with the group to support you in the water.

What do I do on Taketomi Island, and is a guide with me there?

You explore Taketomi Island on your own after taking the included ferry. The main activity is a buffalo cart ride through the village's coral-sand streets and past the red-roofed houses, and you can walk, photograph, and visit local shops and cafes. No guide accompanies you on the island.

What should I bring and wear for this tour?

Wear swimwear under your clothes. Bring a towel and any personal toiletries; the tour provides snorkeling gear, life jacket, fins and a wetsuit (in winter), and hot showers are available at the port afterward.

What are the age and health requirements?

The tour accepts ages 3–59 only. Pregnant guests, children under 3, and those with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or certain medical conditions cannot participate. If you have concerns about ocean comfort or physical strength, contact the operator before booking.

What language is the guide, and how is Taketomi Island transport arranged?

The guide speaks English or Japanese depending on the day's bookings; confirm your preference when you book. A round-trip ferry ticket to Taketomi Island is included, and you travel independently—the guide does not accompany you on the island.
