Cook Nagoya specialties in a local home instead of watching a demonstration

A private cooking class in Kasugai where you make classic Nagoya dishes (red miso stew, shrimp tempura in a rice ball, and fried chicken) in your host Akiko's home kitchen, then sit down to eat the meal together. The class runs about three hours and includes pickup from JR Kasugai station. You can choose a lunch or dinner option. Akiko speaks English, Spanish, or Japanese, and will accommodate dietary preferences if you mention them when booking.

Step-by-step itinerary

Private Nagoya-style cooking class

  • Meet host Akiko in kitchen
  • Learn to make dashi stock
  • Prepare red miso stew
  • Cook shrimp tempura or fried chicken
  • Share the Nagoyan style meal

The experience

Red miso stew is the foundation of Nagoya cooking, and you'll learn to make it from scratch: starting with dashi stock. Akiko walks you through the technique in her own kitchen, not a commercial classroom, so you're working at her pace with her equipment and her approach to the food she grew up eating. Most Nagoyans eat their local specialities at restaurants because few people know how to cook them at home. That's what Akiko wants to change.

You'll also prepare shrimp tempura shaped into a rice ball and fried chicken Nagoya style. The class takes about an hour of hands-on cooking, then you sit down together to eat everything you made, with local alcohol included. If you have allergies, dietary restrictions, or preferences (Halal, vegan, or anything else), let Akiko know when you book and she'll adjust the menu. You choose whether the meal is lunch or dinner when you reserve.

Pickup happens at JR Kasugai station. From there it's a short ride to Akiko's home. The experience is private, so it's just you and your group with your host. Public transportation is also available if you prefer to make your own way.
