Cook Japanese home dishes in a local's kitchen, not a classroom

A private cooking class in Yoshiko's home in Takarazuka teaches you to prepare 2-3 traditional Japanese dishes from scratch, starting with dashi stock and ending with a meal you cooked together. The experience lasts about three hours total, includes your choice of four menus, plum wine or local beer, and printed recipes. You meet Yoshiko directly at her home, a 30-minute train ride from central Osaka plus a short taxi ride from the station.

The experience

Yoshiko starts by showing you how to make dashi stock, the foundation for most Japanese cooking, then walks you through preparing 2-3 home-style dishes that build on it. You'll learn how dashi brings out umami flavor and discover the everyday ingredients and techniques a Japanese home cook actually uses. The cooking itself takes about an hour, and you work alongside Yoshiko in her kitchen rather than watching a demonstration.

After you finish cooking, you sit down together to eat the meal you made. Yoshiko offers four menu choices: Mother's Taste (teriyaki chicken or steamed salmon with miso sauce, egg roll, miso soup and rice), Gyoza, Okonomiyaki, or Bento, so let her know your preference at least three days ahead. The experience includes plum wine or local beer if you request it in advance. You'll also take home printed recipes so you can make these dishes again once you're back home.

Meeting Yoshiko happens at her home in Takarazuka. From central Osaka, take the Hankyu Takarazuka Line from Hankyu Umeda Station to Kawanishi-Noseguchi Station, a journey of roughly 30 minutes, then a short taxi ride to her place. Public transportation options are available nearby if you prefer not to take a taxi from the station.
