Harvest vegetables, then cook the meal you picked

A two-hour harvest and cooking class at Malt Ichiriyama Garden, a century-old private house in Miyazaki, where you pick seasonal vegetables and prepare rural Miyazaki dishes including chilled miso soup. The experience includes the harvest and meal ingredients. Groups must be at least two people, and reservations need three days' notice.

The experience

You start at 11 a.m. at the old farmhouse and move straight into the garden to harvest whatever is in season (bamboo shoots, cucumbers, tea leaves, sweet potatoes) depending on when you visit. The work is real: wear clothes that can get dirty and sneakers that grip soil. Local people work alongside you, and that interaction is built into the experience, not added on.

Once you've picked enough, you move to the kitchen to cook. The signature dish is cold soup, a Miyazaki staple made from miso, the vegetables you just harvested, tofu, and ice. It's designed for the hot summers when appetite drops, and it tastes different when you've grown the ingredients yourself. The meal happens at the house, and you eat what you made.

The whole thing runs two hours. Bring clothes loose enough to move and bend in. Sneakers grip better than sandals on damp ground. Book at least three days ahead. Rice cake is available as an add-on for an extra fee if you want to expand what you cook.

What’s included

  • Vegetable harvest according to the season.

What vegetables will I harvest when I visit Malt Ichiriyama Garden?

The harvest changes with the season. Bamboo shoots, cucumbers, tea, and sweet potatoes are common options, but what you pick depends on what's growing the day you arrive.

Is the cold soup something I cook myself, or does someone prepare it for me?

You make it yourself in the kitchen at the house. You use the vegetables you harvested, plus miso, tofu, and ice to chill it. It's a hands-on part of the experience, not a demonstration.

How many people do I need to book this harvest experience?

You need at least two people to apply. Larger groups are welcome, but the minimum is a pair.

What should I wear to the garden, and what happens if my clothes get dirty?

Wear clothes that can get soiled and sneakers that won't slip on wet ground. You'll be working in soil, so plan on your outfit getting marked up. That's part of the experience.

How far in advance do I need to reserve the harvest class?

Reserve at least three days before your desired date. If you want an afternoon start instead of the standard 11 a.m., contact the garden directly to arrange it.
