The experience
You arrive with a free afternoon and no Japanese language skills. This class solves that. Pick a kanji from the instructor's menu and choose your ink color from a wide selection. Using a soft chalk pencil, you sketch the character onto a black or white T-shirt (sizes from Women's M to Men's XXXL). If you want to see how it should look, the instructor will draw a sample in front of you, which you can take home for reference. The whole process is explained in English by someone who teaches Japanese people the language, so the instructions are clear even if calligraphy is completely new to you.
Once your sketch is right, you move to the paint stage. The instructor gives you a few personalized tips, then you apply the ink color you selected. After you finish, you use absorbent sheets to gently remove any excess ink. You can wear the T-shirt right away or fold it into a plastic bag to pack. The same process works on traditional lanterns or Japanese umbrellas if you prefer those instead. Each one becomes a handcrafted memory of Tokyo that you made yourself, not something you bought.
The session runs about an hour. Groups of four or more can arrange a dedicated room. The instructor can host up to 15 people and will work with you on timing that fits your schedule. Children are welcome from age 6.
