The Experience

We met our driver right outside the hotel—he had that easy Jamaican smile and kept calling me “boss,” which made me laugh. I’d picked this private Ocho Rios tour because I hate feeling rushed or herded around in big groups. The van was cool inside (thank god for AC), and he handed us cold bottled water before we even left the parking lot. He asked what we wanted to do first—I blurted out “Blue Hole!” without thinking, but honestly, I was a little nervous about jumping in. My partner just grinned at me like, “You’re going first.”

The drive up to Blue Hole took us past these tiny roadside fruit stalls—mangoes piled high, and you could smell jerk chicken grilling somewhere nearby. Our guide told us stories about growing up in Ocho Rios and pointed out his old school as we passed it. At Blue Hole itself, the water looked almost fake—so blue it didn’t seem real until I felt how cold it was on my feet. There were locals showing off by flipping into the pool from way up high; I managed a clumsy jump (everyone cheered anyway). My hair still smelled faintly of river water hours later.

After that, we could’ve gone anywhere—Dunn’s River Falls was an option, or beach time, or even ATV rides if we wanted. We ended up wandering through the market for souvenirs instead.
