The Experience

The van’s AC felt good after stepping out into the thick, sweet air near Ocho Rios. Our driver, Devon, had reggae humming low as we wound up into the hills. He pointed out little things I’d have missed—like the way the ferns in Fern Gully almost touch overhead, making a green tunnel that smells like wet earth and wild ginger. We slowed for a fruit stand tucked under a blue tarp, where I tried a piece of jackfruit for the first time—sticky fingers, but worth it for that honey flavor.

Lunch was at a roadside jerk spot you’d never find without a local. The smoke hit us before we even got out—spicy-sweet, with a hint of pimento wood. I went for chicken; my friend braved the pork. The pepper sauce had real kick, but the festival bread cooled it down. Afterward, we wandered through town center shops—lots of carved wood and bright fabrics—and chatted with vendors who were happy to share stories about their crafts. By mid-afternoon, we were back in the van, full and just a little sun-drowsy.
