The Experience

The Doge's Palace is where the real shift happens. Gold staircases, ceilings covered in paintings, marble floors that still carry the weight of that history. Then you cross the Bridge of Sighs, which connects the palace to the prisons. It's narrow, and the light comes through in a specific way, and yes, Casanova was held here. The contrast between the two sides of that bridge — power on one side, confinement on the other — is the whole story of Venice in one walk.

St. Mark's Basilica itself is almost too much to take in at once. Byzantine mosaics, marble floors, the sheer amount of gold and detail everywhere.
