Venice Walking Tour, Basilica & Gondola: Skip-the-Line Access
One morning covers the palaces and squares most visitors miss, then the gondola does the rest.
A full-day Venice tour combines a 3.5-hour guided walking tour of Saint Mark's Square and the residential Castello district, skip-the-line access to the Doge's Palace and Saint Mark's Basilica with commentary, and a 30-minute shared gondola ride. The guide leads you through hidden squares, narrow alleys and winding canals, then into two of Venice's most visited monuments, leaving the afternoon free and ending with a classic ride on the water.

The experience
The tour starts at the Clock Tower on Saint Mark's Square and moves quickly into Castello, the neighborhood where Venetians actually live. Your guide walks you through the labyrinth of narrow alleys, locals call them "calli", and across many bridges, stopping at campo Santa Maria Formosa and campo San Giovanni & Paolo, where the doges were buried. You'll pass the former residence of Marco Polo and the Malibran theatre on the way back to the square via the Mercerie, the shopping street that connects Rialto to San Marco.
The Doge's Palace comes next with your skip-the-line ticket. You cross the Bridge of Sighs, visit the prison cells, and move through rooms that mix Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance architecture. This was once the residence of the elected Doge and the seat of the Venetian government. It opened as a museum in 1923. After the Palace, your guide takes you through Saint Mark's Basilica, pointing out the gold mosaics and the relics that made it the spiritual heart of the lagoon. The walking portion ends at 1 pm, leaving you roughly two hours to eat lunch or wander before the gondola ride.
At 3 pm or 5:15 pm (depending on availability), you meet an assistant in front of the Saint Mark's post office and board a shared gondola for 30 minutes. The route starts on the Grand Canal and moves into the smaller canals, giving you the view of the city that Venetians have had for more than a thousand years. Your ticket to the Doge's Palace also grants access to the Correr Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, and the monumental rooms of the Marciana National Library on Saint Mark's Square, which you can visit the same day or within six months.
