The experience
The tour begins at St. Mark's Square with a historical introduction to its architecture and the monuments that surround it: the Basilica, the Doge's Palace, and the Renaissance clock tower. From there, your guide leads you away from the crowds into Castello, the residential heart of Venice. You walk through the labyrinth of narrow alleys called "calli," cross many bridges, and pass through wide squares like Campo Santa Maria Formosa, one of Venice's largest, with its church named after the Holy Virgin's visitation. Along the way you'll see Campo Santi Giovanni and Paolo, where several Doges are buried, and the equestrian monument of Bartolomeo Colleoni, an Italian mercenary captain. You also pass Marco Polo's former residence in Corte Secondo del Milion and the Malibran theatre, built in just four months at the end of 1677.
The Doge's Palace dominates St. Mark's Square with its collision of Byzantine, European and Oriental architecture. You enter through the great courtyard and see the Golden Staircase, then move through the halls where the Doge and his Council controlled the Serene Republic, surrounded by paintings from Italian Renaissance masters. Tintoretto's work here includes the world's largest oil painting. The Bridge of Sighs, named by the English poet Lord Byron, connects the palace to the new prisons and offers a last view of the lagoon before imprisonment. Your skip-the-line ticket gets you past the entrance queue.
St. Mark's Basilica was once the private chapel of the Doge and is the only one of its kind in Italy. Inside, golden mosaics and marble inlay flooring cover the interior. Your guide describes the biblical scenes throughout the building and its ancient history while you sit and absorb the atmosphere. The tour includes the Pala d'Oro, an altarpiece of gold, silver and precious stones that exemplifies Byzantine art. Your Basilica ticket remains valid for six months and grants entry to other Venetian churches listed in the itinerary.
At the end of the tour, keep your Doge's Palace ticket to visit the Correr Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, and the monumental rooms of the Marciana National Library on your own, all located in St. Mark's Square opposite the Basilica.
