The experience

The tour starts in the St. Mark's area, where your guide walks you through the landmarks that formed the center of Venetian power. You'll enter Doge's Palace first (the official residence and seat of government during the Republic), and move through the spectacular rooms lined with masterpieces, the halls where the state convened, and the prison cells where Casanova was jailed. Skip-the-line access means you walk straight in instead of waiting at the door.

St. Mark's Basilica comes next. Once the Doge's private chapel, it's covered in golden mosaics and treasures, with the famous exterior domes and the loggia holding the golden horses. Your guide explains the history and the craftsmanship while you stand inside. If high tides or religious ceremonies prevent interior access on your date, the tour extends to the outside of the Basilica instead. The Rialto Bridge (the oldest span over the Grand Canal, still lined with shops as it was in the Middle Ages) gives you a view of the palaces along the canal banks.
