Inside the Doge's Palace & Across the Bridge of Sighs

You get a guided walk through the Doge's Palace and its prisons, entry to St. Mark's Basilica with its gold mosaics and terrace, plus a VR experience of medieval Venice. If you add the Bell Tower, you trade the Basilica interior for a 98-meter elevator ride and panoramic views. All skip-the-line tickets, audio guide, and radio earpiece are included. Bring comfortable shoes and a valid ID — bags aren't allowed inside the Basilica.

2h–3h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Visit Doge’s Palace rooms and artwork
  • See the Last Judgment by Tintoretto
  • Cross Bridge of Sighs to prisons
  • Tour St. Mark's Basilica mosaics
  • View St. Mark's Square landmarks

The Experience

Your guide meets you at the entrance to Piazza San Marco and hands you a radio earpiece so you can hear over the crowd noise. That small detail matters more than you'd think — Venice is loud with tourists, and the guide's voice stays clear as you step into the Doge's Palace. The first room hits you with scale: the Golden Staircase, marble and gilt, leads up to the halls where the Doge and the Republic's highest officials made decisions that shaped Mediterranean trade for centuries. Your guide walks you through rooms filled with paintings by Tintoretto and other Venetian masters, and then points out the "Last Judgment" — one of the largest paintings in the world, covering an entire wall. It's the kind of thing that's hard to photograph because you can't step back far enough to see it whole.

Then comes the part people remember: the Bridge of Sighs. You cross it with the guide, descending into the old prisons where Casanova was held before his escape. The cells are small, the stone is cold, and the light comes through narrow windows. It's not theatrical — it's just real, and that's what makes it stick with you. After that, the Basilica of Saint Mark itself. If you choose the standard option, you enter with the guide and stand under the gold mosaics that cover the ceilings and domes. The guide explains which ones were brought back from Constantinople, which ones were made locally, and why the Basilica was originally the Doge's private chapel. You also get access to the terrace and the museum on the first floor. If you pick the Bell Tower option instead, you skip the interior and take the elevator 98 meters up — the tallest structure in Venice — and look out over the domes, the square, and the lagoon spreading out in all directions.

The tour also includes a VR experience at the History Gallery, where you put on a headset and see Piazza San Marco as it was in medieval times — the Basilica as a fortress-chapel, the Palace as a working fortress. It's strange and effective, a way of seeing the square as something other than a postcard. You get an audio guide and digital map to use on your own time, and skip-the-line access to the Marciana Library, the Correr Museum (which has the Empress Sissi rooms and the Napoleon Dancing Hall), and the Archeological Museum. That's a lot of ground covered in one day, and the skip-the-line tickets mean you're not spending two hours in queues.

Top questions

How long does the tour take?
The itinerary doesn't specify a total duration, but the Doge's Palace, Basilica, and VR experience typically take 3–4 hours depending on the option chosen and how long you spend in each space.
Can I choose between the Basilica interior and the Bell Tower?
Yes. If you select the Bell Tower option, you visit the Basilica from outside only and take the elevator to the top instead. The standard option includes the full interior tour with the terrace and museum.
What's included in the skip-the-line tickets?
Skip-the-line access to the Doge's Palace, St. Mark's Basilica, the Marciana Library (closed Sundays), the Correr Museum, and the Archeological Museum. The Bell Tower ticket is included if you choose that option.
Do I need to bring anything?
A valid ID document is required for security checks at the Basilica entrance. Comfortable shoes are recommended. Bags and luggage are not allowed inside the Basilica, so plan accordingly.
What if I visit on a Sunday?
The Marciana Library is closed on Sundays. The Basilica tour may be adjusted to include direct access to the terrace and St. Mark's Museum on the first floor instead of the main interior, depending on religious services.
Is there a dress code?
Yes. Suitable clothing is required for the Basilica — no shorts. The dress code is enforced for security and religious reasons.
What if there's high tide or a religious function?
The tour does not operate in case of exceptional high tide or unplanned religious celebrations. In those cases, it can be postponed to the next day or refunded.
Do I need to pay the Venice entry fee?
On certain dates, day visitors from outside Venice are required to pay a €5 access fee. Check the official Venice tourism site (cda.ve.it) to see if the fee applies to your visit date and whether you qualify for an exemption.
What's the VR experience like?
You put on a VR headset and see Piazza San Marco as it appeared in medieval times — the Basilica as a private chapel and fortress, the Palace as a working fortress. It's a short, immersive way to understand the square's history.
Can I take photos inside the Basilica?
The itinerary doesn't specify photography restrictions, but many churches in Venice limit or prohibit flash photography. Check with your guide when you arrive.
