The experience

The boat leaves Sorrento at dawn and hugs the coastline for seven to eight hours, stopping where the captain chooses based on water and weather. You'll pass the ruins of Roman villas carved into the cliffs, then reach Queen Giovanna's Baths: ancient stone pools where legend says the queen herself once bathed, now filled with crystal water and ringed by rock. The open design means you sit close to the sea the whole way. There is no cabin to retreat into, which is the point. The captain speaks English and knows the coast intimately.

The route takes you to Li Galli, the small archipelago where mythology places the sirens who sang to Ulysses. You'll sail past Marina della Lobra in Massa Lubrense, a village of colorful houses meeting clear water, then toward Amalfi itself, where the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea rises above the main square. Along the way you pass Conca dei Marini and the Emerald Grotto (light filters through the cave mouth and turns the water inside a shade of green), and the Fiordo di Furore near Praiano, a fjord carved into the cliffs with turquoise water and steep rocky walls. Positano comes next, the vertical town of pastel buildings stacked on the hillside above the sea. A swim stop at Tordigliano, a small rocky cove with clear water, breaks up the day before the return to Sorrento.

Towels, water, soft drinks, beer, Prosecco, Limoncello and dry snacks are on board. The captain picks you up and drops you off at your hotel or a designated meeting point.
