experience

What’s the experience like?

We piled into the little electric golf cart just off Rome Termini, still blinking off the train ride. Our guide—Giulia, with this easy laugh—handed us earpieces and asked if we’d had coffee yet (I hadn’t). The city felt like it was already humming; scooters zipped past as we rolled towards the Pantheon. I’d seen photos but standing there—even for a short stop—the columns felt heavy with time. There was this smell of old stone and espresso drifting from somewhere nearby. We didn’t linger long, but that first moment stuck.

The Trevi Fountain came next, all white marble and a tangle of people tossing coins over their shoulders. Giulia told us to throw one for luck, two if you want to fall in love (I did both—who knows). She pointed out the best angle for photos but also told us about how they clean out thousands of euros every week for charity. I liked that detail; it made the place feel less like a postcard and more like something alive. The golf cart zipped down Via del Corso after that—window displays flashing by—and honestly, it was kind of fun watching locals weave through traffic like it’s nothing.

Piazza Venezia looked even bigger from our little seat on wheels, all those statues looking down at us like we were ants. We drove past the Arch of Constantine and slowed near Circus Maximus where you could almost hear chariot wheels if you squinted (or maybe that was just my imagination). At Bocca della Verità, someone dared me to stick my hand in—the stone mouth is colder than you expect and yeah, I pulled my hand out fast just in case.

I lost track of how many piazzas we passed—Campidoglio, Largo Argentina (with those sunbathing cats), then finally Piazza Navona where we said goodbye. The whole thing only took 1.5 hours but somehow felt bigger than that—maybe because Giulia kept weaving little stories between facts or maybe just because Rome does that to you. I still think about that first glimpse of the Pantheon when I close my eyes at night.
