The Experience

We were already rumbling past the Aurelian Walls before I realized how tiny that Fiat 500 really is — Andrea grinned at my surprise and said Romans call it “il cinquino,” like it’s part of the family. The car made this funny little putt-putt sound as we zipped down the Appian Way, and honestly, I felt like I’d stepped into an old Italian film. The Colosseum looked different from that low angle, almost more massive. We stopped for what Andrea called “the classic shot” — me, the Fiat, and that ancient stone behind us. The sun was just starting to dip; warm light bounced off the cobbles in Trastevere as we squeezed through alleys barely wider than my shoulders. I didn’t expect to love the Orange Garden so much. There was this faint citrus smell mixed with city air, and you could see all the way to St Peter’s if you squinted past the orange trees. At Fontana dell’Acqua Paola, we took a longer break; water splashing loud enough to drown out traffic for once. Andrea showed me how he frames shots with his hands (I tried it — failed spectacularly), then let me wander for a minute while he fiddled with camera settings. It was quiet up there, except for some kids chasing each other around the fountain.

By the time we swung past Tiber Island and that odd Pyramid of Caius Cestius (I had no idea Rome even had one), I’d lost track of how many photos Andrea had snapped.
