The Experience
I didn’t expect to actually laugh out loud as soon as I saw that tiny red Fiat 500 waiting for us near Trastevere. It looked like something out of an old movie—our guide Marco waved from the driver’s seat, grinning like he’d been doing this forever (he probably has). The engine made this cheerful little hum as we squeezed in, and suddenly Rome felt smaller, closer. People on the street smiled or nodded—one older woman even gave us a thumbs up. I guess you can’t really blend in with a car like that.
We zipped past the Circus Maximus and the Baths of Caracalla, Marco pointing out details I’d never have noticed on my own—like how the stones near the Pyramid of Caius Cestius still feel cool even in late morning heat. At each stop, our photographer (Giulia) had us pose in ways that didn’t feel awkward—she even managed to catch me mid-laugh when I tried to pronounce “Fontana dell’Acqua Paola.” Li laughed too; my Italian is hopeless. There was this moment up on Janiculum Hill where everything went quiet except for distant church bells and some birds—Rome stretched out below, not busy for once.
The best part? A surprise gelato stop (I picked pistachio because Giulia said it was “molto romano”). The place smelled like fresh cones and coffee. We just sat on a low wall outside, sticky fingers and all, watching scooters blur by. After that, more winding streets, more photos—sometimes people waved or called out “bella macchina!” which I think means they liked the car, or maybe just the whole scene.
I still think about that view from Trastevere as we finished—the light was soft and gold on those old ochre buildings. It’s funny how riding around in a vintage Fiat 500 makes you feel both totally obvious and completely at home here. If you’re after something polished or perfectly planned, this isn’t it—but honestly, that’s what made it stick with me.
