The Experience

You get picked up from your hotel in a vintage Fiat 500 and driven through Rome by Andrea, a local photographer who knows which corners catch the light and which piazzas empty out before noon. The car itself is part of the shot—it's how you move through the city, and it's how the city moves around you. Over the course of the morning or afternoon, you'll stop at eight or nine locations: the Colosseum framed from the Garden of Mount Opium, the Pyramid of Caius Cestius (older than the Colosseum, and nobody expects to find it here), the Orange Garden with its view down over the rooftops, Trastevere's narrow alleys, the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola where half the films in Rome were shot, and Piazza del Campidoglio at one of the highest points in the city. Andrea shoots on a Nikon D850 and works fast—he's looking for natural moments, not posed ones, which means you're not standing around waiting for the light or holding a smile.

The Appian Way and Aurelian Walls come into it too; you'll drive along a stretch of the ancient road and stop for about ten minutes near the Arch of Drusus before heading toward the pyramid. There's also the keyhole at the Priory of the Knights of Malta—the one where you can see St. Peter's dome framed through a lock—but there's usually a 40-minute line, so Andrea photographs it from the car instead. Bocca della Verità gets a stop, though the real work happens at the higher-altitude spots where the whole city spreads below you. By the end of the day, you have a collection of professional photos to keep, which is the whole point: you're not paying for a tour with photos attached; you're paying for a photographer who happens to know Rome well enough to move you between the best light and the fewest crowds.
