The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound — that echo of footsteps on old stone near the Colosseum, just after sunset. Our photographer, Luca, waved us over with a grin and somehow made me feel less awkward about posing in front of strangers. He had this way of spotting little pockets of light that made everything look softer, even my tired face. I didn’t expect to laugh so much trying to mimic those classic Roman gestures he showed us (my partner was way better at it). I was nervous about looking stiff in every photo but Luca kept chatting about Rome’s history (he knew weird facts about Marcus Aurelius that I’d never heard), which distracted me enough to actually smile for real. We finished at the Trevi Fountain — late enough that most tourists were gone except for one couple tossing coins and giggling quietly. I tried to say “cornetto” properly when we stopped for coffee; Luca laughed and corrected me (I definitely butchered it). Still think about that last shot by the Pantheon — something about the way the marble glowed under streetlights stuck with me.
