The Experience

I’ll be honest — I almost chickened out when I saw Alberto’s tiny red Fiat 500 waiting by the Colosseum. It looked like a toy car next to all those modern taxis, but he waved me over with this big, easy grin and suddenly I was climbing in, knees bumping the dashboard. The engine made this cheerful puttering sound as we set off, weaving through Rome’s morning traffic like it was nothing. Alberto started pointing out little details straight away — graffiti that’s older than my parents, a bakery that smells like warm sugar and coffee even from the street.

We zipped past Circus Maximus and stopped for photos, but it wasn’t rushed at all. Alberto knew exactly where to pull over for the best view — he even poured us each a small glass of local wine up on Aventine Hill (I tried to say “grazie” properly; he laughed and corrected me). The air up there was cooler, and you could hear church bells echoing from somewhere behind the pines. I still think about that quiet moment above the city, just sipping wine and listening to him tell stories about old Rome — some true, some probably not, but who cares?

Driving through places like Forum Boarium and Oppian Hill Park felt different with someone who actually lives here. At Piazza della Bocca della Verità, Alberto dared me to stick my hand in the Mouth of Truth — I hesitated (what if it really bites?), but he just grinned and snapped a photo before I could back out. We finished near San Pietro in Vincoli so I could see Michelangelo’s Moses (it really is intense up close), then rolled back toward the Colosseum for drop-off. It wasn’t polished or rehearsed — just felt like hanging out with a friend who happens to know every shortcut in Rome.
