The experience
If you're arriving in the Naples area without a car or want to avoid navigating the ruins alone, this tour handles the logistics: your guide picks you up, drives you in a climate-controlled Mercedes van, and walks you through both sites at your own pace. The guide is a licensed archaeologist with a background in history, so the commentary goes beyond the usual stops. You'll hear about the political intrigues, love affairs and daily routines of the people who lived there, from merchants and slaves to gladiators and patricians. Skip-the-line tickets are included, which matters because Pompeii draws crowds year-round.
Pompeii itself spans from the ancient walls to the Grand Theatre, and the route covers the Forum (the political and religious heart), the Basilica, temples, the market, luxury private homes with their gardens and frescoes, bath-houses, taverns and bakeries. You'll see plaster casts of eruption victims in the Granaries and mosaics in the homes. Herculaneum, buried deeper and better preserved, shows a different side: the second stories of buildings still stand, the sewer system is visible, and carbonized wood survives. The private homes here (the House of the Deer, the House of the Skeleton, the House of Neptune and Amphitrite) have intact gardens and vivid frescoes. The tour ends at the ancient beach, where the remains of 200 citizens who died during the eruption are preserved in the yards where they sheltered.
Midway through the day, the guide drives you to a family-run organic farm on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius for lunch and wine tasting. A short walk through the vineyards and olive groves shows how the family produces Lacryma Christi wines and extra-virgin olive oil. Lunch is a set menu: bruschetta, cured pork and cheese to start, spaghetti with cherry tomatoes from Vesuvius, and pastiera (a wheat and ricotta cake) for dessert. Five wines are poured across the meal, from rosé sparkling to a sweet Malvasia. The view of the Bay of Naples from the farm is the backdrop. Wine tasting and lunch cost €28 per person, paid on-site by card or cash. Vegetarian and children's menus are available. The tour runs 8 to 9 hours total, and the guide speaks English, Spanish or Italian.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (1 to 17 years): free; Infant (under 1): free.
What's the difference between Pompeii and Herculaneum if I'm visiting both?
Pompeii was a chaotic port town buried in ash. Herculaneum was a luxury resort buried in mud and lava, which preserved it better. At Pompeii you see the Forum, markets, taverns and the scale of city life. At Herculaneum the private homes are more intact, with second stories still standing, gardens preserved, and vivid frescoes and mosaics. Herculaneum also has the ancient beach where 200 citizens died sheltering in the yards during the eruption.
Do I need to book the wine tasting and lunch in advance?
The wine tasting and lunch at the farm are optional and not included in the tour price. You pay €28 per person on the spot by card or cash. Vegetarian and children's menus are available if you let the guide know.
Will I be walking a lot, and can I go at my own pace?
Both sites are explored on foot at your own pace, so you can linger at frescoes or ask questions without holding up a group. The guide is ready to answer all your questions and curiosities. Infants can ride in a pram or stroller, and the tour is suitable for all fitness levels.
How does pickup work if I'm staying in Naples or don't have a car?
Pickup is included in the tour price. The guide picks you up at your hotel or accommodation and drives you in a Mercedes van with air conditioning, free wi-fi and fresh water. You're driven to both archaeological sites and to the farm for lunch, so you don't need to arrange transport yourself.
