The Experience

The first thing I noticed in Pompeii wasn’t the ruins, but the way the dust felt under my shoes—soft, almost chalky, like walking through someone else’s memory. Our guide, Lucia, had this habit of pausing mid-sentence to let us really see things: old graffiti scratched into stone, a bakery oven still blackened. I kept looking back toward Pompeii from the terrace—there’s something strange about seeing both destruction and new life in one sweep of your eyes.
