The Experience
The day started with us nearly missing our train at Rome Termini — I’d misread the platform sign (classic). But we made it, breathless and laughing, just as the doors slid shut. The high-speed train to Naples is so much smoother than I expected; you barely notice the countryside blurring past. At Naples station, our guide Marco waved a little sign and greeted us like he’d been waiting for old friends. He had this way of explaining things that made even the traffic outside sound interesting.
I didn’t really know what to expect from Pompeii. Walking those ancient stone streets with Marco pointing out where bakers once worked or where graffiti still clings to faded walls — it felt strange and sort of intimate. There’s this smell too: dust and something green, maybe wild herbs growing in cracks? The sky was heavy but warm. Marco told us stories about daily Roman life that made me forget we were surrounded by tourists snapping photos. Afterward, we ducked into a pizzeria nearby for lunch — proper Neapolitan pizza with chewy crust and just enough char. The owner grinned when I tried my Italian (“Un’altra birra?”), then brought over a dessert I can’t pronounce.
Herculaneum was quieter, almost eerie in places. You can see wooden beams still blackened from Vesuvius’ eruption — it’s weirdly moving to touch something that old. Our group fell silent more than once just looking at frescoes in tiny rooms. The air felt heavier here or maybe it was just my imagination after Marco described how quickly everything changed in 79 AD. We rode back to Naples together, tired and a bit sunburned. I kept thinking about those lost cities all the way back on the train to Rome — how people lived there, laughed there… you know?
