Step-by-step itinerary
Wine tasting and lunch at Vesuvius
- Transfer from Pompeii to winery
- Guided vineyard walk with family member
- Wine tasting of 5 organic wines
- Lunch with typical local dishes
The experience
How do you spend three hours on Vesuvius without climbing it? You sit on the terrace at Cantina del Vesuvio, a winery the Russo family has run for three generations on the south slope of the volcano, where the sun and proximity to the sea create the conditions for their limited-production Lacryma Christi DOP. The experience begins with a guided walk through their vineyards (a member of the family walks you through the vines and explains how they work the land), then moves to the reserved terrace where the entire gulf opens in front of you: Naples, Capri, the Sorrento Peninsula all visible from where you sit.
The tasting itself is five Lacryma Christi wines, each paired with a course of the three-course lunch. You also taste the winery's own wine vinegar and olive oil. The dishes are local specialties from the Vesuvius area. Nothing shipped in, nothing generic. The private reserved session means you're not sharing the terrace with other groups. The driver who brings you from Pompeii speaks English and waits to take you back when the three hours are done.

Is this one for you? This works best for small groups or couples who want to taste wine in a specific place rather than visit multiple wineries, and who have three hours to spend without rushing between sites. The private reserved session means you're not rotating through with other groups, and the views across the bay are part of what you're paying for, not a bonus.

Top questions
What is Lacryma Christi and why is it from Vesuvius?
Lacryma Christi DOP is an organic white wine grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Vesuvius, where the mineral-rich soil and the south-facing exposure create conditions that produce the wine's distinctive character. The Russo family's limited production is sold only at the winery itself.
Can I see the Bay of Naples and Capri from the winery terrace?
Yes. The winery sits on the south slope of Vesuvius in the National Park, positioned so the entire Bay of Naples is visible from the terrace, including Capri Island and the Sorrento Peninsula across the water.
Do I need to be able to walk to enjoy this experience?
The guided vineyard walk is part of the experience, but the winery is wheelchair accessible, all surfaces are accessible, and the tasting and lunch take place on the terrace. If mobility is a concern, let the operator know when you book so they can discuss what works for your needs.
What happens if I have dietary restrictions or allergies?
The lunch consists of three courses of local specialties from the Vesuvius area paired with the wines. Contact the operator before your booking to discuss any dietary needs or allergies so they can prepare accordingly.
How long does the drive take from Pompeii to the winery?
The total experience is three hours, which includes the vineyard walk, the tasting, the lunch, and the drive time. The winery is located within the Vesuvius National Park on the south slope, accessible by car from Pompeii.
