The experience
The boat leaves from your chosen departure town and heads out into the Tyrrhenian Sea toward Capri's limestone cliffs and hidden coves. Along the way, the coastline shifts from the steep terrain of the Amalfi Coast (fishing villages tucked into the rocks, old watchtowers still standing) to the taller, more dramatic cliffs as you approach the island itself. The Faraglioni rock formations come into view first: three massive stacks rising straight from the water, one pierced by a natural arch that the boat passes through. The captain navigates close enough to feel the scale of them.
The day centers on four grottoes, each one reached differently. The White Grotto has bright limestone walls that glow soft white as sunlight fills the cave and reflects off the turquoise water below. The Green Grotto is where you jump in and swim: the sunlight filters through the water and lights the cave with a green cast. The Blue Grotto requires a transfer to a small rowboat (€18 per person, usually with a wait at the entrance), but the payoff is the famous electric blue light that fills the chamber. Between the grottoes, you have time to swim off the boat, relax on deck, and watch the Punta Carena Lighthouse (red and white stripes) rise against the sky as you move along the coast.
Lunch happens at a waterside restaurant of your choice. The captain can suggest one based on what you're after. The boat carries snorkeling equipment, towels, bottled water, sodas and snacks throughout the day. Restroom facilities are on board. At the end, you return to your starting point or ask to be dropped at a different town. The full day runs seven hours, and the pace is yours to set. The captain and hostess are there to guide the boat and handle the details, not to rush you through a schedule.
