itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Visit Cinta Senese farm and tasting

  • Walk through vineyard and olive grove
  • Visit Cinta Senese pig farm
  • Interact with pigs in semi-wild state
  • Visit small cellar
  • Taste Cinta Senese cured meats and cheese
  • Enjoy lunch with local agricultural products

Hands buried in straw, someone calls out “Ciro!” and this enormous pig comes trotting over like he owns the place. Roberto grins at us — he knows every pig by name, which is wild to me. The Cinta Senese pigs have these funny white belts around their bellies, and they’re all muddy from rolling around under the olive trees. I tried to get a selfie with one but ended up with mud on my jeans instead (worth it). The air smells like warm earth and something sweet from the vineyard nearby.

We wandered through rows of vines and old olive trees before reaching the pig enclosure. Roberto explained how these pigs roam semi-wild, eating acorns and cereals grown right here in Montepulciano. He handed us some feed — I swear those pigs know exactly who has snacks. There was a moment where everything went quiet except for the snuffling sounds and distant birds; it felt oddly peaceful, like time slowed down for a second. I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed just watching pigs eat.

Lunch was set up outside under a faded awning. There were platters of Cinta Senese cured meats (salami, ham, lardo — I lost track), thick slices of pecorino di Pienza with homemade jam, panzanella soaked in olive oil, and red wine that tasted almost peppery. Someone passed around cantucci cookies to dip in vinsanto — I might’ve had three or four, honestly lost count. It all felt very unhurried; Roberto told stories about his grandfather’s recipes while we ate. On the drive back through the Tuscan hills, I kept thinking about that first bite of cheese with jam — simple but somehow perfect.
