Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Monte Pellegrino and Palazzina Cinese
- Start from your accommodation
- Visit Monte Pellegrino sanctuary
- Enjoy panoramic views of Palermo
- Tour the Chinese Palace
- Admire Art Nouveau villas in Mondello
The experience
The tour opens at Monte Pellegrino, a limestone promontory rising 606 metres above the bay north of the city. The mountain is home to the sanctuary of Saint Rosalia, known locally as "Santuzza," the patron saint of Palermo whose cult runs deep through the city's identity. Goethe called it the most beautiful promontory in the world, and from the summit the panorama stretches across Palermo, the surrounding mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The climb and the views anchor the morning of the tour.
From there you move to the Palazzina Cinese, the Chinese Palace, a former royal residence built by the House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies in the Chinoiserie style and set inside the park of La Favorita. The palace now houses the Ethnographic Museum of Sicily, named after Giuseppe Pitrè, so you walk through both the architecture and the cultural holdings of the building. The route then takes you to Mondello, where you see the Art Nouveau villas that line the coast, a quieter contrast to the mountain and the palace.
Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language depending on availability, and you'll be contacted the day before to confirm the meeting time at your hotel or B&B. The vehicle is air-conditioned and private to your group, so the pace and the stops stay under your control. Dress is smart casual. If you're traveling with infants, they sit on an adult's lap. The tour runs four hours total.
