The Experience

The day starts at 8:30 am with pickup from your hotel and a 30-minute stop in Castellammare del Golfo, a seaside town on the slopes of Monte Inici, where you have breakfast with typical Sicilian pastries—sfinci, cannoli and cassatelle. From there, it's about 20 minutes to Segesta Archaeological Park, an ancient city founded by the Elymians 2,800 years ago. You walk the site at your own pace: the Ancient Theater carved into the rock at the top of Monte Barbaro and the Doric Temple, its colonnade perched on a cliff more than 100 meters high. The park sits among the best-preserved archaeological sites in Sicily, and the panorama from the mountain is what makes it evocative.

After a couple of hours at Segesta, you head toward Erice, an Elymian stronghold at 750 meters elevation. The drive takes about an hour, and when you arrive, the air shifts—fresh mountain air instead of the coast. Erice has been fought over by Romans, Arabs, Normans and Spaniards, and the medieval streets still carry that history. You can walk to the Castle of Venus, a 12th-century Norman fortress built on the ruins of an older temple, or explore the town's convents and bakeries, where cloistered nuns made the famous almond paste biscuits. Lunch is on your own at one of the local restaurants or trattorias; the Trapani cuisine and local arancina are worth trying.

Around 3:30 pm, you leave Erice and drive an hour to Marsala, where the air changes again—the salt and seaweed smell of the coast returns. You arrive at Cantina Florio, founded in 1833, one of the oldest cellars in Sicily. The 90-minute experience includes a guided tour through the historic cellars and a tasting of three Marsala wines paired with three food pairings. This is where you taste the real Marsala, the wine that shaped Sicilian enology through the Florio family's work. At 6:30 pm, the driver takes you back to your hotel.
