Five wines, five Sicilian flavors, one afternoon at a historic winery

A half-day winery tour from Palermo includes hotel pickup, a guided tasting of five premium wines from Duca di Salaparuta, and a gastronomic pairing of Sicilian street food at a traditional winery founded in 1824. The group stays small to keep the experience personal, and a live guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French.

The Experience

The winery sits a few kilometers outside Palermo, and the day starts with pickup from your hotel. Once there, you walk into the Baglio—the 1857 headquarters of Cantine Duca di Salaparuta—and meet the wines that built modern Sicilian winemaking. The Alliata di Villafranca family, Dukes of Salaparuta, introduced Sicilian grape varieties to the world, and this tasting moves through five of them: Bianca di Valguarnera, Nawari, Triskelè, Duca Enrico, and Ala. Each one comes with a story about the land it comes from and the technology that brings out what the grapes can do.

The tasting pairs each wine with Sicilian street food—a sandwich with panelle, croissant with salmon, sfincionello, arancina, and an almond and chocolate dessert. These are not restaurant dishes; they are the flavors Palermo eats, made with simple, high-quality ingredients from the territory. The guide walks you through how the wine and food work together, and the group stays small enough that questions get answered and nobody rushes through the moment.

The whole experience runs three hours. Transportation is private, so the timing stays yours, and you return to your hotel at the end of the day without arranging a thing.
